Health Literacy is defined as the ability to obtain process, demonstrate, perform and understand basic health information and its meanings in full context to make healthy decisions and applying it to your daily life. Health can be divided up into six different dimensions; physical health, mental/intellectual health, emotional health, social health, spiritual health and vocational health. Health literacy is more than just informing students about all the risks they could fall victim to but rather insuring they have gain a true understanding of healthy behaviors and are capable of practicing these in their everyday lives. Students need to understand the risks that come with being physically inactive as well as the risks that come with underage drinking and drug uses among their peers. For example alcohol alone, according to the Youth Risk Behavior Surveillance report done in 2011 the percent of people who begin to drink when they are in high school increases by more than 15%. My goal is to instill lifelong health values that can ultimately lead to them turning their life round and keep them out of risk for obesity and health related diseases such as diabetes and making good health decisions.  If I can have every student walk out of my classroom with a concept or technique they can use to better their lifestyle in a healthy way, then I have done my job. I plan on making class fun and excited for Students to be in.
